Project Overview
Penguin Books is launching a new series called, Famous Couples. Each book tells the story of a famous couple, such as Adam and Eve, Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera, Freddie Mercury/Jim Hutton, Kermit/Miss Piggy, etc. The famous couple I chose to depict was Edward and Kim from the 1990 film "Edward Scissorhands" directed by Tim Burton.
The aspects of Edward, Kim, and their relationship that I attempted to convey in my design was Edward’s gentle nature, Kim’s delicate and accepting personality, how their appearances contrast one another, and how their relationship is tragic and romantic. I feel that the approach that I inevitably followed through with was the most appropriate because the aforementioned aspects of their relationship are depicted through the actions of the objects rather than their appearances.

Sketches
For my early sketches, I tried to stay away from anything too obvious. I wanted the viewer to not understand the cover until after watching the film (or reading the book).

Initial Digital Roughs
For the rough cover designs, I explored my three strongest concepts. The first concept (scissors and needle) ended up being the one that I chose in the end. The second concept (scissors and snow globe) was even more obvious than the first concept. The third concept is referencing two specific scenes towards the end of the film.
